Considering the number of veterans, serving personnel, and military families across our communities — the answer may surprise a lot of people.

The good news is that becoming an accredited Veteran Friendly GP Practice in Wales appears to be a relatively straightforward process through the programme supported by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).Practices taking part receive specialist training and support around: Veterans’ health and wellbeing Understanding military service-related needs Supporting serving personnel, veterans, and families more effectively Promoting fair treatment, dignity, and respect.

Participating surgeries also routinely ask patients whether they or family members have served in the Armed Forces — helping ensure people receive the support and understanding they may need.

This feels like one of those small changes that could make a genuinely positive difference within our communities — particularly around wellbeing, mental health support, and helping veterans feel recognised and understood.

There are only 8 accredited practices from a total of 47 in our area.

It may be worth asking your own GP practice:“ Have you considered becoming a Veteran Friendly accredited practice?” Sometimes simply starting the conversation is how positive change begins.

Our veterans served their country. Ensuring they feel properly supported within local healthcare should never feel like an afterthought
