I thought it would be useful to share this, because growing older in Wales should be a positive and empowering experience for everyone. Many older people tell us they feel safe in their homes and communities, have access to the support they need, and feel listened to and treated fairly.
That’s something we should be proud of.
But we also all know this isn’t the reality for everyone. Too many older people still face barriers that affect their health, well‑being, and independence. These challenges can leave people feeling excluded, unvalued, or left behind — and that’s something none of us should accept. That’s why the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales has set out a clear three‑year Strategy shaped directly by the voices of older people themselves. The focus is on tackling the issues that matter most and driving the improvements older people want to see. A detailed Work Programme sets out the actions planned for the year ahead.
But real change needs all of us — especially policy‑ and decision‑makers. They have a responsibility to listen, act, and make sure services truly meet the needs of older people across Wales. The Commissioner will be monitoring progress closely and holding public bodies to account where needed. Together, we can build a Wales where every older person is valued, included, and supported to live with dignity and independence.A Wales where growing older is not something to fear — but something to celebrate.
