Following Welsh Government’s commitment to creating an age-friendly Wales, Carmarthenshire has now taken an important step by joining the World Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.

What This Means

This initiative brings together partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors to support older people to: -

  • Live well
  • Remain independent
  • Stay socially connected

Developing a Local Action Plan

A key part of this work will be the development of a co-produced action plan, shaped by:

  • The experiences of older residents
  • Input from community groups and organisations
  • Local priorities across the county

The work will focus on key areas including:

  • Housing
  • Transport and accessibility
  • Outdoor spaces and buildings
  • Social participation and inclusion
  • Communication and information
  • Health and community support

Why This Matters

Creating age-friendly communities is about ensuring that people can continue to live independently, participate socially, and feel supported as they age. This work represents an important opportunity to align national commitments with local, practical improvements.

Final Thoughts

As with all initiatives, the key will be ensuring that engagement leads to meaningful outcomes for residents.I welcome any feedback from residents and will continue to support this work as it develops.
