I wanted to help share an important warning following new figures showing that romance fraud cost victims across the UK more than £102 million last year alone.

Sadly, these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often targeting people through social media platforms, dating sites, and online messaging. Criminals create convincing fake identities and build trust over time before asking for money, investment help, emergency support, or even cryptocurrency transfers.

What is especially concerning is that people aged between 55 and 74 experienced the greatest financial losses, with many victims being manipulated emotionally over long periods of time.

Investigators are also warning that scammers are now increasingly using AI-generated photographs and messages to make fake profiles appear more believable.

Please remember:
🔹 Be cautious if someone forms a very strong emotional connection unusually quickly online
🔹 Be wary of repeated excuses avoiding face-to-face meetings or live video calls
🔹 Never send money, cryptocurrency, vouchers, or gift cards to someone you have not met in person
🔹 Be cautious of sudden medical emergencies, travel problems, or investment opportunities being mentioned
🔹 If something feels uncomfortable or pressured, speak to someone you trust
These scams can affect absolutely anyone, and there should never be embarrassment in asking for advice or support.

If you believe you may have been targeted, please report it via:

If money has already been transferred, contact your bank immediately.
Please help raise awareness by sharing this post, particularly with friends, family members, neighbours, or older relatives who may be more vulnerable to this type of scam.
