Dementia affects thousands of individuals and families across our communities, yet many people living with the condition still experience isolation, misunderstanding, and loneliness simply because others may not fully understand what dementia is or how it affects daily life.

That’s why initiatives like Dementia Friends, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, are so important. A Dementia Friend is simply someone who takes a little time to learn more about dementia, understand how it can affect people, and discover small everyday ways to make a positive difference within their community.

Sometimes it’s the smallest acts — showing patience, offering understanding, taking time for a conversation, or supporting a carer — that can mean the world to someone living with dementia. You don’t need special qualifications, medical knowledge, or large amounts of free time to help.

Dementia Friends come from all walks of life, and anyone across Wales and the UK can get involved. Whether through attending a local or virtual Dementia Friends session, watching the online video, volunteering, fundraising, or simply helping raise awareness, every single person who becomes more informed helps create a kinder, more inclusive, and more understanding community for those affected by dementia.

We often talk about building stronger communities — and this is one of the simplest but most meaningful ways we can all play a part.
