Shocking new research has revealed that litter is present on almost every major road in Wales — with 98.8% of A and B roads showing signs of rubbish, and cigarette butts found on 88%.
In Carmarthenshire, there has been a worrying rise in glass bottles and vapes being thrown from cars — both of which can cause real harm to wildlife, road users, and the cleansing teams who keep our county clean.
That’s why Carmarthenshire County Council is supporting Keep Wales Tidy in their Welsh Government-funded Drive Your Litter Home campaign.
Why this matters? Roadside litter: -
Harms wildlife.
Pollutes streams, rivers, and coastal areas.
Creates dangerous conditions for drivers and cyclists.
Costs thousands to clean up — money that could be invested in our communities.
And despite the best efforts of volunteers — over 1,300 clean-ups this year in Carmarthenshire alone — the problem is growing.
Worryingly, 70% of local clean-up groups report finding vapes, which can leak harmful chemicals and even explode when damaged.
What You Can Do?
A few small habits make a big difference: -
Drive your litter home — don’t leave it on the roadside Recycle glass via your kerbside collection
Take vapes to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre Report problem areas so cleansing teams can respond Support local volunteer groups who give their time to keep our communities clean.
Keeping Carmarthenshire clean, safe, and beautiful is something we all have a part in — whether you’re a driver, walker, cyclist, or volunteer. Let’s protect our wildlife, our roadsides, and our shared environment.
Drive your litter home — every time.
