I wanted to provide an update regarding ongoing developments at Nantycaws Recycling Centre, as this is a matter that has implications for both service delivery and road safety.

Current Proposals

Plans are being explored to establish a centralised waste depot at Nantycaws from June 2026, replacing the existing network of four depots. Preparatory works have now been approved, which include:

  • Removal of approximately 10,000 tonnes of soil
  • Up to 12 daily lorry movements
  • A projected six-month programme of works

Road Safety Concerns β€” A48

A significant issue identified is the current access arrangement from the A48 dual carriageway. Vehicles travelling from Carmarthen are required to cross live traffic to access the site, which presents a clear safety concern. The Welsh Government has indicated that:

πŸ‘‰ Future development at the site will not be supported unless appropriate road safety improvements are implemented

Proposed Improvements

Potential solutions under consideration include:

  • A new roundabout at the Nantycaws junction
  • Improved access infrastructure
  • Wider A48 safety enhancements

These proposals form part of the National Transport Delivery Plan (to 2027).

What This Means

  • Approved preparatory works can proceed
  • Full depot development is contingent on road improvements
  • There is a reasonable expectation that improvements may be delivered within the coming years

Final Thoughts

This situation highlights the importance of ensuring that infrastructure and safety considerations are addressed alongside development proposals. While improvements to waste services are important, it is equally essential that road safety concerns are resolved. I will continue to monitor progress closely and ensure that residents’ concerns are represented.
