As part of building stronger, more supportive communities, I wanted to highlight the importance of the Dementia Friends initiative, led by Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia affects many individuals and families across our communities. However, a lack of understanding can often lead to people feeling isolated or excluded. Dementia Friends aims to change this by helping people better understand the condition and how small, everyday actions can make a meaningful difference.

A Dementia Friend is someone who takes the time to learn more about dementia and uses that understanding to support others — whether through patience, conversation, or simply helping someone feel included. Importantly, becoming a Dementia Friend does not require a significant time commitment. It can involve:

  • Attending a short face-to-face or virtual session

  • Watching a brief online video

  • Applying simple, practical actions in everyday life

These small steps can have a significant impact, helping individuals living with dementia to remain connected, independent, and supported within their communities. This initiative reflects the kind of community we all want to be part of — one that is understanding, inclusive, and supportive. If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend, I would encourage you to find out more and consider taking part.
