Many people care deeply about protecting our landscapes, habitats and wildlife. One organisation working passionately to ensure nature has a strong voice is Wild Cymru, an independent conservation charity dedicated to safeguarding the future of Welsh wildlife.
Founded in 2018, Wild Cymru was created in response to a growing concern that Wales needed a truly independent organisation able to speak openly and challenge environmental decision-makers when wildlife is at risk.
Their vision is simple but powerful: “A Wales with more wildlife in more places, created by a society that intrinsically values the natural world.
”Standing Up for Nature Wild Cymru works across a wide range of conservation activities designed to protect species, restore habitats and strengthen public understanding of the natural environment. Their work includes: Species and habitat conservation projects.
Targeted initiatives to protect wildlife and restore important ecosystems. Research, surveys and monitoring gathering the scientific evidence needed to better understand the health of Wales’ wildlife. Habitat management and landowner support working with landowners and communities to improve habitats and support biodiversity. Community engagement and education helping people reconnect with nature and understand the importance of protecting it.
Advocacy and environmental campaigns Speaking up for wildlife and encouraging stronger protections where they are needed. Independence at the Heart of Their Work One of the defining principles of Wild Cymru is its independence. To ensure it can remain objective and uncompromised, the organisation does not accept direct funding from Welsh Government or its statutory environmental bodies.Instead, its work is made possible through the support of individuals, charitable trusts and foundations who share the goal of protecting Welsh wildlife.
A Strong Voice for Nature Wild Cymru’s mission is clear: -
To be the strong, unconstrained voice that Welsh wildlife needs — speaking out and putting the needs of wildlife first. At a time when biodiversity loss and environmental pressures are increasing, organisations like Wild Cymru remind us how important it is to protect the natural world around us.
Because safeguarding wildlife today helps ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the incredible landscapes and species that make Wales so special.
