🌟 Challenging Ageism in Our Community — Age Without Limits

As many of you know, I’m a firm believer that every member of our community — whatever their age — deserves respect, opportunity, and the chance to live life fully.

So some of the findings from new UK-wide research really struck me. According to a national poll of 4,000 adults: -

šŸ”¹ Many people think we stop “looking good in the latest fashions” at 56.

šŸ”¹ One in ten believe that age is 40.

šŸ”¹ People believe employers stop seeing someone as a desirable hire at 55.

šŸ”¹ And many think older adults struggle with technology or experience cognitive decline far earlier than evidence shows.

These attitudes aren’t just wrong — they’re harmful!!!

They reinforce ageism in workplaces, in society, and even in how people see themselves. As the Centre for Ageing Better puts it, this is internalised ageism — when people begin limiting their own lives because society tells them to.

But here’s the hopeful part: -

✨ Nearly one in three people felt there is no age limit on wearing what you like.

✨ One in ten believe age should never define whether you’re a good candidate for a job.

✨ And the data proves it: people in their 50s, 60s and 70s often thrive — in work, in volunteering, in community leadership, in life.

This is why the Age Without Limits campaign matters.

It reminds us that ageism is not only unfair and inaccurate — it’s a barrier to good health, opportunity, confidence and equality.

šŸ‘„ Why this matters.

Our community is full of people who give their time, skills and heart — volunteers, carers, experts, craftspeople, workers, neighbours — many well past the ages these stereotypes suggest.

We simply wouldn’t function without the contribution of people in midlife and later life.

And for anyone who has ever felt “written off” by society, I want to say clearly: -

* You still matter.

* You still contribute.

* You still belong.

* And you still have more to give.

šŸ’¬ What we can all do?

Just a few small actions make a difference: -

āœ” Challenge ageist jokes or throwaway comments.

āœ” Support inclusive hiring and volunteering.

āœ” Avoid saying things like “you’re too old to…”

āœ” Celebrate the skills and experience older people bring.

āœ” Encourage people of all ages to stay involved, visible and valued.

Ageism is a prejudice against our future selves.

Let’s build a Carmarthenshire where everyone can — as the campaign says — Age Without Limits.
