Observations from Community Engagement – Kidwelly Tinplate Museum

I recently attended a community engagement session concerning the potential future of Kidwelly’s Tinplate Museum.

Although the site is outside of my ward, I believe it is important to remain aware of initiatives taking place across Carmarthenshire — particularly where they may offer insight, innovation, or approaches that could be applied more widely.

The session outlined ongoing research into how the historic Old Castle Works building could be brought back into use. Consideration is being given to a range of possibilities, including flexible community and creative spaces, alongside a strong emphasis on low-carbon and sustainable development.

A key theme throughout was the importance of community involvement. The project is still at an exploratory stage, with a clear intention to engage local residents in shaping how the space is used and what it ultimately becomes.

This type of approach — combining heritage, sustainability, and community input — is encouraging to see and may provide useful learning for other areas.
