Supporting Safer, Stronger Communities — A Piece of Work Worth Sharing

Over recent months, alongside my responsibilities as a councillor and wider community volunteering, I have been undertaking work focused on community safety, inclusion, and the experiences of individuals when reporting incidents locally.

While much of this work takes place behind the scenes, it is an important area that directly impacts how supported people feel within their communities.

Research Opportunity — Hate Crime in Wales

As part of this work, I have been made aware of a research project being conducted by Race Equality First, in partnership with Cardiff University.

The research aims to address a key issue:

👉 Why do so few reported hate crimes lead to a prosecution?

To support this, the research team is seeking to speak with individuals in Wales who:

  • Have experienced race and/or religion-based hate crime

  • Reported the incident to the police

  • Since 2016

Taking Part

Participation involves:

  • A confidential and anonymous interview

  • Approximately 30 minutes

  • Conducted by phone or online

  • A £30 thank you payment

Why This Matters

From the work I have been involved in, it is clear that improving systems relies on understanding real experiences.

This research will help to:

  • Identify gaps in current support systems

  • Improve how cases are handled

  • Strengthen confidence in reporting

  • Contribute to safer and more inclusive communities

Final Thoughts

Much of this work happens quietly, but it is an important part of building communities where people feel heard, supported, and safe.

I will continue to support initiatives that help improve outcomes for residents across our area.
