Supporting Service Children in Our Community
Did you know around 4% of our local population has some form of connection to the Armed Forces? That’s slightly higher than many other areas, which means supporting Service families — and especially their children — is particularly important in our community.
Children from Armed Forces families can experience unique challenges that many others may not face. These might include frequent school moves, parental deployment, and periods of separation from loved ones. While these young people often show remarkable resilience, the right understanding and support from schools and communities can make a huge difference to their wellbeing and education.
That’s where Supporting Service Children in Education Cymru (SSCE Cymru) plays an important role. Since 2014, this Wales-wide initiative has been working closely with: -
• Schools and teachers
• Local authorities
• Welsh Government
• Armed Forces families
• Support organisations
to ensure education professionals understand the experiences of Service children and can provide the support they need.
What support is available?
SSCE Cymru helps by providing: -
Guidance and resources for schools so teachers understand the unique experiences of Service children.
Support networks for families moving into new communities.
Research, training and conferences to improve how schools respond to Service children’s needs.
Practical toolkits and information to help children transition smoothly when relocating with their families.
Who is considered a Service Child?
A Service Child includes a child who has: -
• A parent currently serving in the Armed Forces
• A parent who served in the Armed Forces within the last six years (Veteran)
• A parent serving as a Reservist
If you’re a Service family moving into the area — or if your child falls into this category — there are dedicated resources available to help make the transition into local schools easier.
You can find helpful information and toolkits here:
If you are part of a Service family locally, I’d love to hear from you. Your experiences help ensure that our schools and community continue improving the support available.
Our Armed Forces families give so much in service to the country — supporting their children and families in our community is something we should all take pride in.
